Third grade is such a busy year for students.  There is much to accomplish in a few short months.  Language Arts during the third grade year includes learning the parts of speech, grammar, punctuation, and increasing students’ writing abilities.  Students are also always anxious to learn how to write in cursive.  This is added to the curriculum around the second six-week grading period.  Reading incorporates more than simply reading texts and other books.  Students also learn new reading skills such as cause and effect, drawing conclusions, context clues, and the author’s purpose for writing.  Math skills become more difficult as students gain maturity throughout the year and, of course, include multiplication.  Science and Social Studies continue to advance the students’ understanding of these subjects and prepare them for the details that will be added in the upcoming years.  While attending to daily curriculum, third-grade students are building a foundation that will help them to successfully complete the fourth and fifth grades.
