COSMETOLOGY CURRICULUM

HCHS Cosmetology is designed to help the student master all the skills necessary for passing the State Board Examination, selecting the phases of Cosmetology in which to specialize, and entering employment.

PRINCIPLES OF COSMETOLOGY Credit: 1 per semester
Grade: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

This course, which is the first level of cosmetology, prepares students with work-related skills for advancement into the Design Principles of Cosmetology course. Content provides students the opportunity to acquire basic fundamental skills in both theory and practical applications of leadership and interpersonal skill development. Content stresses safety, environmental issues, and protection of the public and designers as integrated with principles of hair design and nail structure procedures. Laboratory facilities and experiences simulate those found in the cosmetology industry. This course of study includes hands-on and classroom instruction in giving shampoos and rinses, scalp treatments, hair setting and styling, anatomy, decontamination and infection control, light therapy, electricity, permanent waving, nail disorders and diseases, massage, manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF COSMETOLOGY Credit: 2 per semester
Grade: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Principles of Cosmetology

This course, which is the second level of cosmetology, prepares students for work-related skills and advancement into the Chemistry of Cosmetology course. Content provides students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in both theory and practical application. Advanced knowledge and skills in hair design, nail artistry, and cosmetic applications will be enhanced in a laboratory setting, which duplicates cosmetology industry standards. This course of study includes hands-on and classroom includes instruction in haircutting, thermal hair straightening, hair coloring, artificial hair artistry, chemical hair relaxing, hair pressing, facials, make-up, hair removal, salon business, and customer relations.

CHEMISTRY OF COSMETOLOGY Credit: 2 per semester
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: Design Principles Of Cosmetology

This course, which is the advanced level of cosmetology, prepares students to perform work-related services using chemicals in the cosmetology industry. Content provides students the opportunity to acquire foundation skills in both theory and practical applications. Laboratory facilities and experiences will be used to simulate cosmetology work experiences. Upon completion and acquisition of 1500 hours, students are eligible to take the Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology examination for a Tennessee Cosmetology License. With styling for men, women, and children in demand, today’s cosmetologist must possess a wide range of skills to meet the needs of today’s beauty salon. Cosmetology offers many channels for personal growth, with limitless career paths from which to choice.
