FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE CURRICULUM

FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE I Credit: 1
Grade: 9, 10
Prerequisite: None

This is basically a comprehensive introductory course which explores all areas of home economics and relates to discovering one’s self and one’s place in society. The activities for accomplishing this are designing room interiors, managing time and money, quick and easy cooking, creative child care, clothing basics for a smart consumer, and teenage problems.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT (offered every other year) Credit: 1

This course draws on aspects of the social and biological sciences of which home economics is a component. It also prepares individuals to understand children’s physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development and to acquire knowledge and skills essential to the care and guidance of children.

TEXTILES AND APPAREL 1 A & 1 B Credit: ½ each
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Must take  1A first

This course prepares individuals to understand the social, psychological and physiological aspects of textiles and apparel; the nature, acquisition and use of apparel and textile products; the selection, construction, maintenance and alteration of apparel and textile products; and the effect of consumer choices on the individual and family. It provides students with laboratory experiences in construction skills individualized to the level of the student.

NUTRITION AND FOOD I Credit: ½
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

This course prepares students to understand the principles of nutrition; the relationship of nutrition to health and well-being; the selection, preparation and care of food; meal management to meet individual and family food needs and patterns of living; and optimal use of the food dollar.

HOUSING & INTERIOR DESIGN (offered every other year) Credit: 1/2
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

Students will prepare to understand the influence affecting housing decisions, trends, issues and consumer aspects. Principles of design, furnishing, and home care will be explored. Careers and related occupations will also be introduced. Emphasis will be placed on using available resources effectively to meet individual housing needs.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS Credit: 1/2
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to focus on communications within the areas of personal, family, and community life, as well as the work place. Decision making, problem solving, critical and creative thinking and technology are all a part of the curriculum. Service learning is a required component.

Communications

Will provide student with an understanding of how to plan for and manage careers in a continuously changing work place. Student will explore multiple career paths. Focus will be placed on work place roles, job expectations, and developing realistic ideas about careers.

ADULT LIVING Credit: 1
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: None

This class is for seniors who are going to be getting ready to be productive adults in society. Student will learn to be informed consumer, provide for their own well being, cope with stress and crisis, manage career goals, and provide for and maintain an optimum living environment for themselves.

WORK BASED LEARNING Credit: 1 per semester
Grade: 12
Prerequisite: Career Technical Class

This class is to be used with a matching class for seniors only. Objectives will be written for each individual student. Students will get a job while enrolled in a class in the Career Technical field to match. Students can than leave 4th block to work and get two credits (one for the class and one for the work).
