USE OF TELEPHONE Any official school business or emergency calls may be made on the office telephone. Students will not be permitted to leave class to receive a telephone call unless it is an emergency. A teacher should not let a student use the phone during class time. *No message or call will be given to a student for an employer. DRIVING CARS TO SCHOOL Students must have a license before assurance of a parking permit and must have at least liability insurance. Students are expected not to exceed the 15 MPH speed limit in the loop around the building or in the parking lot. They are also expected not to exceed 25 MPH speed limit on the access road between the high school and Highway 100. Students who are guilty of speeding or operating a vehicle in any unsafe manner will be suspended from driving on school property until it is determined by the administration that they can accept the responsibility of operating a vehicle safely. In addition, students are asked to park in the designated student parking lot behind the gym. Students are to enter the building immediately upon arriving. No one is allowed to sit in a car during school hours. Anyone returning to their vehicle must get a signed pass from a teacher, and then get permission from the Vocational office. These precautions are for the security and protection of the students and their property. All vehicles are subject to search by the administration while on school property as authorized by state law. Cars parked inappropriately will be towed at owner's expense. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Driving privileges of students may be revoked for discipline reasons. All students driving vehicles may be required to purchase a parking permit and have an assigned parking space. Students violating guidelines may be fined and vehicles may be towed. Students that are assigned to ISS for discipline reasons may be subject to having their Driving Privileges to school being revoked. Students who arrive to school late (five) 5 unexcused times will have their driving privileges suspended.
STUDENT INSURANCE PROGRAM Student insurance will be available under these guidelines and will be treated entirely as an administrative matter: 1. Scheduled or limited coverage will be offered in order to keep the premium within reach of the majority of students. Once the student insurance has been selected and implemented, it becomes primarily a matter between the student (or parent) and the insurance company, with the school participating only to the extent of filling out and turning over to the student (or parent) the portion of the claim form necessary to certify the time, location, and circumstance of the accident, and to identify the student as a participant in the student insurance program. Please read your policy to know what coverage you have. 2. The student insurance offered is advised for all students, especially those that are taking vocational courses. RADIOS, PAGERS, CELLULAR/DIGITAL TELEPHONES or CHAINS OF ANY TYPE Radios, tape players, pagers, or cellular/digital telephones are not to be brought to school at any time and will be confiscated. These items will be kept by the school until a parent comes to pick them up. VISITORS All visitors must enter the building either through the front entrance or the vocational entrance, and receive a visitor pass. While parents are encouraged to visit they too must receive a visitor's pass. No loitering on school grounds will be tolerated by anyone. Students who want to bring a visitor on campus must have the approval of the administration and their teachers at least one day prior to the visit. Pre-school children or students within the county, or drop-out and suspended students, will not be permitted to visit the campus without permission. This action includes the right to call police and swear out warrants. This is for the protection of our students at HCHS. VISITING CLASSES DURING SESSIONS Students are not to visit classes while they are in session or disturb teachers while classes are being conducted. SCHOOL PUBLICITY Permission to publicize school activity over radio or through newspapers must be obtained from the office. Any organization desiring to place posters or other advertising media in school for either school or outside activities must have the approval of the office and be placed in an approved area. Road blocks will not be allowed to raise money for any school club or organization. Once the activity is completed the sponsor of the activity must be responsible for removing all material. DRESS CODE POLICY The following guidelines were recommended and approved by a committee made up of parents, students and teachers. 1. Any clothing which is disruptive to classroom routine is inappropriate for school wear. Included as disruptive are the following: Excessively tight clothing such as spandex shorts. Clothing bearing obscene words or pictures. Clothing bearing endorsements for alcohol or tobacco products. See-through clothing. Undergarments worn as outer garments (boxer shorts, long-johns). No suggestive wording or pictures on any clothing. Sagging of clothing will not be permitted. All shirts and blouses deemed to be too long by the Administration must be tucked in. Shirts or Blouses may not exceed 3 inches below the waistline. Clothing must be size appropriate. 2. The trunk of the body should be entirely covered from the shoulders to the point on the legs three (3) inches above the knee. Covering the trunk of the body includes making sure that: Underclothing is not exposed by slits or holes. No part of the body between the shoulders and three (3) inches above the knee on the legs is exposed. 3. No hats, caps or sunglasses are to be worn inside the school building. 4. No trench coats are to be worn in or on school grounds. 5. Any jewelry which could be considered dangerous or disruptive will not be permitted. This includes tongue rings, nose rings or eyebrow rings. The above rules would allow shorts for both girls and boys and sleeveless tops which cover the shoulders (but no tank tops). Skirts would have to be at least as long as shorts in order to be acceptable. Offenders of the dress code will be subject to the following: 1st time offense - ISS, 2nd time and thereafter - one day suspension from school. 6. Shoes that have rollers (skate shoes) are not permitted at school. 7. Any form of hair style/color or dress which is considered contrary to good hygiene, distractive or disruptive in appearance and detrimental to the purpose or conduct of the school will not be permitted. DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY Any student in the Hickman County School System found guilty of illegally using, possessing, selling or transporting drugs including marijuana or alcoholic beverages on school property, or any school sponsored function shall be required to attend the Alternative School or suspended at the discretion of the Administration. In any case the student must appear before the Hickman County School Board Discipline Committee to have his case reviewed and a final decision made concerning discipline. TOBACCO Use of tobacco in any form by students is prohibited at school and at all school related activities. Students using tobacco or having tobacco in his/her possession on school property or at other officially sanctioned school activities (whether at HCHS or some other school HCHS may be visiting for an activity) will be subject to disciplinary action. Repeated smoking offenses will lead to suspension from school, and a petition to court will also be issued.
HALL CONDUCT In order to respect the rights of others, walk and keep quiet in the halls. Please keep to the right at all times in the corridors. Any student who is in the halls during class hours must carry a pass from a teacher and have a partner. These may be checked by any member of the faculty at any time. The bell for the close of the class period is for class dismissal; students should remain seated, however, until the teacher dismisses the class. This is a mark of courtesy. The five minute intermission between classes is for going to the locker, going to the wash room, and getting to class on time. Be proud of your school building. Take time to keep it clean by using the waste baskets for trash in the halls and the classrooms. Students should not run or be boisterous in the halls, lunch line, or anywhere in the building. During lunch periods or break, students are not permitted to loiter in the classrooms. Other students are in class during this time and should not be disturbed.
