13. Any other conduct prejudicial to good order or discipline in the school.

IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION

In order to maintain greater control and provide more guidance for students whose disruptive behavior forces their temporary removal from the regular classroom, suspension shall be conducted in the secondary schools in accordance with the following guidelines:

1. Students will be assigned to in-school suspension by school administrators.

2. The administration will inform staff members of the names of those students assigned to in-school suspension. This will include notifying the student's counselor.

3. The administration will notify the parents in writing that a student has been assigned to in-school suspension, giving the reason for such assignment. A conference may be held prior to the student's re-admittance to regular classes.

4. The principal/assistant principal shall see that each student assigned to in-school suspension will have textbooks and class work assignments. If the student does not, the principal/assistant principal shall make the necessary arrangements to have the student get this material.

5. Credit shall be given for all assigned class work completed during the period of the In-School Suspension. This material is to be turned in under the rules set forth by the Board. The student may also make up any test or quiz given during his suspension. Evaluation of the class work and test/quiz shall be done by the classroom teacher.

ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL

The purpose of the Alternative School is to remove a student from the regular school environment for inappropriate personal/social behavior or infractions of school rules. When students are placed in this program by an administrator, it will be an opportunity for them to reflect back on the behavior they exhibited in the school and/or classroom which led to their conflict. It is expected that the isolation of these students from their friends during school hours will be an incentive for them to correct their inappropriate behavior in order to return to the enriched atmosphere of the regular school program. Hopefully, students assigned will realize that they alone are totally responsible for their behavior, and inappropriate conduct should not infringe upon the learning process of other students.

1. Students will be assigned to the Alternative Classroom for the following infractions of school rules.

a. Fighting

b. Habitual truancy

c. Chronically cutting class or leaving school grounds

d. Refusal of disciplinary action

e. Theft

f. Willful and persistent violations of school rules

g. Habitual commission of minor offenses

h. Other conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline

i. Drug and alcohol use or possession. The Zero Tolerance policy will be followed.

2. When any of the above infractions occur, the student involved will have a conference with the principal or assistant principal.

3. The student may be assigned to the Alternative Classroom for a determined number of days. The Alternative Classroom instructor may increase or decrease time placement. Any request for reduction of the placement must be approved by the appropriate principal.

4. A written notice of the suspension from regular classes and placement in the Alternative Classroom will be sent to the parent. In most cases, telephone contact may be made by the school.

5. The student will report to the Alternative School from 8:00 until 3:00. The student will be responsible for his/her transportation to and from Alternative School. In the event a student is absent from school for any reason, he/she will be required to make up those days.

6. Each student is expected to have all necessary materials with him/her for completion of assignments. This list includes textbooks, paper, pencils, or material from teachers.

7. The Alternative Classroom instructor will supervise students during the school day. Students can expect help with their learning difficulties as well as be present at all times for aid in working with assignments and counseling sessions.

8. Students assigned to the Alternative Classroom are suspended from all school extracurricular activities and athletic contests.

9. Students will be expected to bring their lunches with them to the Alternative Classroom at the beginning of the school day.

10. Any student who fails to correct his/her behavior can expect to remain in the Alternative setting until a commitment for improvement has been observed.

11. Written records will be maintained in each case of alternative placement. This information will include the student's name, the infraction date, material used, assignments completed, outcomes or results of conferences, attitudes, conduct and other data which might have a bearing on the case.

12. Students will be monitored closely regarding acceptable behavior, homework assignments, and assigned tasks. If work or behavior is not acceptable the student will be given out-of-school suspension during which the student will receive zeros for class room work. The student must then re-enter the Alternative Classroom prior to re-entry into regular school program. After Alternative School, the next severe behavior will be referred to court.
