DISCIPLINE/ATTENDANCE POLICY

PHILOSOPHY

All students have an obligation to develop self-discipline and individual responsibility to behave positively so that their actions do not prevent teachers from teaching and students from learning.

I. LEVEL I Demerit

Demerits will be given for:

1. Persistent violations of any school or classroom rule

2. Persistent violations of any cafeteria rule

3. Persistent violations of any bus rule

4. Attendance violations (Current Attendance Policy to be followed)

II. Once a student receives five (5) Level I demerits, the student will automatically receive one (1) Level II demerit.

An Administrator will recommend disciplinary procedures beginning with:

1. After-school detention (3:00 - 5:00)

2. In-school suspension

3. Saturday school (7:30 - 12:30)

4. Suspended for no more than 10 school days

5. Alternative school

6. Referral to juvenile court

III. If a student's behavior becomes so outrageous that the maintenance of good order within the school is impossible, then an Administrator may skip all levels of punishment, in his/her best judgment, to assign appropriate discipline. This procedure is to be at the Administrator's discretion.

IV. If a student fails to comply with determined penalty, he/she will be referred to the next disciplinary procedure listed above.

V. LEVEL I Unexcused Tardies

Each unexcused tardy is a Level I demerit counted separately from other Level I demerits. For example, a Level I demerit for an unexcused tardy and four (4) demerits for other infractions will not be added together for a Level II demerit. However, five (5) Level I demerits for tardiness will result in a Level II demerit with disciplinary procedures including after-school detention, in-school suspension, and Saturday school. If a student refuses those disciplinary procedures, he/she may be sent to Alternative School. A double tardy will be given on the 2nd time for 1st period only.

VI. LEVEL II DEMERITS - SEVERE CLAUSE

A. The severe clause issued when rules are broken in such a manner that the staff member considers it extremely disrespectful or dangerous. Some severe clause violations include use of tobacco, drug possession, weapon possession, defying authority, extreme disrespect, etc. Fighting is a misbehavior that will merit Alternative School and the police may be called, and the student be referred to court. Also students who have been tardy unexcused five (5) times will receive a Level II demerit. Laser Pointers are not permitted at HCHS, students bringing these devices are subject to a Level 2 Demerit, and the laser pointer will be confiscated.

B. If a student is to receive one Level II demerit (under the Severe Clause), he/she will be immediately referred to the principal or assistant principal for determination of penalty. Only administrators are to give Level II Demerits. Teachers may recommend.

C. A student will carry over all Level II demerits for discipline until the end of the school year. 5 Level I's will equal a Level II demerit.

D. If a student reaches six (6) Level II Demerits, the student can be automatically suspended and a meeting with the Hickman County Disciplinary Committee must be called.

VII. Level I demerits are removed after each semester.

Cafeteria and other school personnel may submit disciplinary forms to the principal for referral.

Substitutes will not have the authority to issue demerits, but will submit notes to the teacher which could result in a student receiving a demerit. Any immediate problem needs to be brought to the attention of the principal or assistant principal. Any substitute who works five (5) days in succession could receive permission from the principal to issue demerits. A full time assistant may also issue Level I demerits and make recommendations for Level II demerits.

VIII. Cheating will not be permitted. Students caught cheating will receive a "0" for that assignment or test.

IX. If it becomes necessary to assign a student to ISS or Alternative School, those students will not be allowed to participate in any Extra Curricular Activities or school sponsored activities while assigned.

FLOW CHART FOR DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

TEACHER CITATIONS (TC) will be issued for in-class minor misbehavior

LEVEL I DEMERITS (L1D) will be issued for persistent minor misbehavior

LEVEL II DEMERITS (L2D) will be issued for severe misbehavior

THERE ARE TWO WAYS A STUDENT MAY RECEIVE A L2D:

A severe misbehavior = one (1) L2D = action by administration

Five (5) L1D's = One (1) L2D = action by administration

A 5 (five) member Discipline Committee will be appointed by the Principal to deal with difficult discipline issues.

ATTENDANCE POLICIES

PHILOSOPHY

The Hickman County Board of Education deems good attendance a vital part of successful progress toward a child's education. The interaction between teacher and student, and among students, cannot be duplicated by outside-of-class assignments. Therefore, absences from class must be for serious and verifiable reasons.

Enrollment of a student in the Hickman County School System by parent(s) or guardian(s) signifies an agreement to abide by all policies of the Hickman county Board of Education.
