EARLY DISMISSAL POLICY:

Students shall not be permitted to leave school premises during the school day without the request of the parent/legal guardian and the approval of an administrator. Just because a parent/legal guardian gives permission, it does not mean it is excused by the school.

An unexcused absence will mean that students will receive a zero (0) in all classes missed for that day, and will not be allowed to make any work up for missed classes.

It is the student's responsibility to notify his teachers that he will miss class, and obtain their signatures on an Early Dismissal Form before leaving the building.

Failure to complete an Early Dismissal Form and return it to the Vocational Office before leaving the building is an automatic Level II Demerit. The student's driving privileges may also be revoked.

PROCEDURE:

Paper work for Early Dismissals should be handled through the Vocational Office.

In order to cut down on confusion, all students must be picked up and checked out through the Vocational Office.

All students who come or go between 8:00 a.m. - 2:40 p.m. must do so through the Vocational Office.

Students desiring to leave school during the school day should fit into one of the following categories. Students must meet the following requirements before permission to leave will be granted by the office.

I. STUDENTS WITH NOTES

A written statement showing necessity of the student to leave school must be dated, signed by a parent/legal guardian and include a phone number where the parent/legal guardian can be reached for verification of the note if necessary. This statement should be taken to the Vocational Office no later than before 7:55 a.m.

Upon presentation of the parent's note, the student will receive an Early Dismissal Form. The parent's note will be attached to this form. The Early Dismissal Form should be excused or unexcused by the administrator before teachers signatures are obtained by the student. The Early Dismissal Form must be completed and returned to the Vocational Office before the student is allowed to leave the building. Failure to do so will result in a Level II Demerit, and possible loss of driving privilege.

II. STUDENTS WITHOUT NOTES

The parent/legal guardian must request that a student be released early. Failure to send a note to school with the student means the parent/legal guardian must call or physically come into the Vocational Office to request release of their child.

If the student must contact the parent prior to such a request, the student must have a note from a teacher to request the use of the office phone. The student must have a note from their teacher to use the phone. Under no circumstances should a student be allowed to use an office phone to request permission to leave the school except for illness.

After such a request has been made by the parent/legal guardian, the student is still required to complete an Early Dismissal Form, and turn it in to the Vocational Office before he/she is given permission to leave the building -- Illness may be an exception. Failure to do so will result in a Level II Demerit and possible loss of driving privileges.

In addition, if a parent/legal guardian or designated relative comes into the Vocational Office to pick up a student during school hours, he/she is still required to sign the check out sheet for release of that student. The only signature recognized by the office will be that of a mother, father or legal guardian, unless the parent calls and verifies the fact that the student is to leave with someone other than the above mentioned relatives.

III. STUDENTS LEAVING BECAUSE OF SICKNESS OR EMERGENCY

Students that become sick at school and request to leave school should be placed in the clinic until a parent/legal guardian can be contacted by the office. However, the clinic will not be misused for any reason.

It is recommended that students not be "excused for sickness" unless they are experiencing one of the following symptoms: fever, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, seizure, or injury requiring some immediate medical attention. The clinic should be reserved for these students who are obviously ill. Because of the clinic's location, the Front Office will initiate the procedure for a sick student excused to leave. Once the parent/legal guardian has been contacted by the Front Office for the student to leave early, then an Office Worker should be sent with an Early Dismissal Form to the teachers whose classes will be missed by the sick student. The Office Worker should obtain all the signatures, have the Early Dismissal Form completed, and return it to the Vocational Office as soon as possible. Sick students must leave through the Vocational Office. Non-driving students who are excused to leave for sickness may leave upon the parent's arrival to pick them up. The parent/legal guardian must still sign the check-out sheet for the student's release in the Vocational Office.

Students who drive and become so ill that they are "excused for sickness", should not be driving themselves home without parent permission. They should remain in the clinic until they improve, and their parent contacted, or the parent should come and pick them up following the same procedure outlined above.

In every case, the Early Dismissal Form should be completed and filed in the Vocational Office when a student is released from school during school hours (8:00 a.m. - 2:40 p.m.).

IV. ABSENCE STATUS

The status of "EXCUSED" OR "UNEXCUSED" for Early Dismissal is to be determined by an administrator. Early Dismissal should be excused or unexcused by an administrator before a teacher signature is obtained by the student. Teachers insights/comments concerning the student's dismissal should appear on the form for review by the office.

V. EXCUSED ABSENCES

1. Funeral (discretion of the administrator)

2. Serious illness in immediate family (family includes parents, step-parents, guardians, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunt and uncle

3. Student's personal illness (only excused after parent is contacted)

7. Approved school related activity/field trip (teacher will furnish list of participating students to all faculty members)

*Verification notes should be taken to the Vocational Office before 7:55 a.m. Such notes will also be attached to the Early Dismissal Form. Absence status will automatically be UNEXCUSED if verification of medical appointment or court appearance is not received within two days of the absence. If status is changed to UNEXCUSED, it will appear on the announcement sheet.
