PHYSICAL EDUCATION & WELLNESS CURRICULUM

DRIVER EDUCATION Credit: ½

Grade: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisites: Driver’s Permit

This course is designed to help the student learn safe driving techniques and to prepare for the successful completion of the Tennessee driver’s license test. Course is limited to 12 students per section and is offered each quarter.

LIFETIME WELLNESS Credit: 1

Grade: 9

Prerequisite: None

The lifetime wellness curriculum consists of seven units of instruction. Each unit has its own learning – specific goals and objectives. The seven topics included are: personal fitness and related skills, nutrition, safety and first aid, disease prevention and control, mental health, substance use/abuse, sexuality and family life. The course is sequenced in such a way that students may satisfy the two quarter of the credit requirement in different semesters. This is especially helpful to student athletes. Classroom instruction and physical activity are both integral parts of the course. Students are introduced to numerous physical education programs such as polymetrics, weight training, track and field, step aerobics, line dancing, self defense, speed walking, circuit training, and others as time permits. Instructional time includes guest speakers, lab activities, videos, group projects, library research, and oral presentations, in addition to text materials and lecture.

 

TEAM SPORTS Credit: 1/2

Grade: 10, 11, 12

Prerequisites: Satisfactory grade In Lifetime Wellness

Team sports is a class designed for the student with a keen interest in advanced physical education activities and competitive games. It is an 9-week curriculum that includes instruction in five team sports including volleyball, basketball, whiffle ball, flag football, and badminton. Weight training is also a vital part of this program to enhance performance in any sport. Students learn the rules of each game, discuss equipment needed to play, and participate in game play during the class. Unit tests are part of the evaluation process. Points of emphasis in the course are adherence to game rules, good sportsmanship, the value of team sports as part of lifetime wellness program, and team sports for recreation.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS Credit: ½ per quarter

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Coach’s Approval

Students who participate in athletic programs receive advanced P. E. credit for the time these programs are in season if coaches choose to have practice time during school hours. Grades are pass/fail and are not used for any rank-in-class or grade point average.
