SPECIAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

NOTE: All Special education classes have content designed to meet the individual needs of the students as indicated by their IEP’s. Skills and objectives for each content area follow the state curriculum for that subject matter. In the least restrictive environment, student needs are met by modifying subject matter, teaching techniques, and materials used. All classes are designed to teach skills needed for students to become independently functioning members of society.

RESOURCE ENGLISH 9, 10, 11, 12 Credit: 1 per year

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

These courses cover the skills and objectives as listed in the regular English curriculum, emphasizing those skills included in the Gateway English.

RESOURCE FOUNDATIONS I Credit: 1

Grade: 9

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

This course covers the skills and objectives as listed in regular Foundations I.

RESOURCE MATH II Credit: 1

Grade: 9, 10

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

This course covers the skills and objectives as listed in regular Foundations II.

RESOURCE MATH III Credit: 1

Grade: 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

This course covers material tested on the Gateway Algebra. Content includes signed numbers, powers, roots, ration/proportions, solving and graphing linear equations/inequalities, word problems, and polynomials. Geometric concepts of perimeter, area, and volume are covered. Also included are graphs, statistics, and probability."

RESOURCE STUDY SKILLS Credit: 1 per semester

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

Course is used to enable students to learn correct study habits, wise

budgeting of time and resources, and improvement of math, English, and reading skills. This class is a pass/fail course.

RESOURCE TRANSITIONS I Credit: 1

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

This course covers reading and math skills needed for successful transition from school to work. It also deals with problem solving and strategies required for successful completion of high school classes.

RESOURCE TRANSITIONS II Credit: 1

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

This course covers career development and job seeking skills. In this class a realistic career plan will be developed and goals established. It also involves completing applications, resumes, job interviews, and completion of many forms required on the job. Transitions I is not a prerequisite.

RESOURCE TRANSITIONS III Credit: 2 per semester

Grade: 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

This course covers job keeping and work maturity. Job placement is a part of this class. Students leave school and work in various jobs in the community. This class is primarily for juniors and seniors. Transitions II is a prerequisite for this class.

RESOURCE READING Credit: 1 per semester

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

An intensive, direct instruction reading program. Placement is determined by pre test. Curriculum created for 4th grade through adult students.

COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT CLASS (CDC) Credit: 1 to 4 per semester

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

CDC is designed to meet the varying needs of individual students with cognitive limitations. Student needs specified in the IEP are met through direct instruction in functional academic skills, daily and community living skills, related social skills, and vocational skills. Students participate in selected school, community and work experiences to develop independent living and employability skills to the highest degree possible. A necessary and critical component to the full development of each student is access to and involvement in the general curriculum and community activities.

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION Credit: 1 to 4 per semester

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by IEP Team

Experiential Education is designed to meet the needs of the individual student as indicated in his/her IEP. The objectives are to meet the needs of students with challenging behaviors. Social skills training, conflict resolution, and core curriculum are emphasized.

GIFTED PROGRAM INDEPENDENT STUDY / EXCEL Credit: 1 per semester

Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Eligibility by Team

This program is for those students who have already been certified in the Gifted/Excel Program. Students will work with the Gifted Program instructor on individual projects which elate to specified academic programs and may receive elective credit for that work. Students who are duly registered for this course will be placed in the library each day and work independently on their projects. The Gifted instructor will meet and supervise their work on a weekly basis.
